SEARCH:
The SEARCH program at LSi3 is an interdisciplinary enrichment resource pull-out model. Students in grades 1–5 meet one full-day per week. The rigorous curriculum emphasizes creative and critical thinking skills, problem solving, research, collaboration and communication, as defined by the State’s core competencies for gifted students. Students participate in activities and units that encourage them to pursue their strengths and interests and become more independent and resourceful learners in seeking knowledge and understanding. Students are challenged to take intellectual risks in new and uncharted areas of their learning. Nurturing their affective side, students investigate their learning styles, multiple intelligences and characteristics of being gifted.
Every week, students engage in specific creative and critical thinking and math enrichment activities as well as a unit of study that varies throughout the year. These learning opportunities will give them open ended opportunities to create, organize, reflect upon and demonstrate their learning. Critical thinking activities such as analogies, logic matrices, scenario problem solving, STEM projects and mysteries emphasizing analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information will be integrated into learning. The day will also be full of brainstorms and brain teasers, research and writing to organize and present information, reflective journal writing, advanced reading and writing with an emphasis on strong word choice and advanced vocabulary understanding.
